SXSW Interactive 2014: My Moment of “SQUEEEEE!”

Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

I feel as if I can calmly post about this now.

Much like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart‘s “Moment of Zen” clips, I had a a moment of “SQUEEEEEE!” back in October. SXSW Interactive announced that Adam Savage of Mythbuster’s fame would be the Keynote for Monday, March 10 at 2pm.

My jaw dropped.

A excited stream of “OhMyGawd, OhMyGawd,OhMyGawd,OhMyGawd…” uttered from my mouth.

I think I wet myself a bit.

I couldn’t be more excited! As a complete science nerd (yes Nerd, not geek) I cannot wait to attend this session. Savage has been influential in advancing STEM education, DIY culture, and just plain cool stuff for years, his thoughts on advancing science education and and creativity will fit in perfectly with SXSW. I can’t help but wonder if he’ll float by SXSW Create as well.

And as if this wasn’t enough, There will be a special ZERO-G Experience flight departing Austin on Saturday, March 8!
The ZERO-G flight allows users a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience true weightlessness. Via the company’s specially-modified Boeing 727, parabolic arcs are performed to create a weightless environment allowing you to float, flip and soar as if you were in space.. Participating in this amazing opportunity requires separate fees, but you can receive a 10% discount if you use the code (SXSW14) when purchasing your ticket.

Heavy Attendance at the SXSW Interactive Austin Meet Up

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

There was a great crowd out for the Austin Interactive meet up last night. the room was packed, we were eating tacos and drinking free beer, so much so that it gave us a flashback to SXSW 2012 (or was it a premonition of this coming March?)

It was great to see some familiar faces we only see at SXSW (some we almost didn’t recognize) including some of the incredible SXSW Interactive team: Kathryn Irwin, Tammy Lynn Gilmore, Kelli Krause, Sarah Garcia, and of course Hugh Forrest.

Hugh spoke to the crowd briefly, highlighting some of the new and returning speakers and events at this years conference, here are the ones that stood out:

  • There will be a huge focus on space and a large presence of NASA, which makes sense given the Elon Musk Keynote. Most of the sessions and events related to space will be at the Omni Downtown. For a complete list just search on “space” or look for the “Science and Space Exploration” theme in the Schedule.
  • SXSW Create will return for a second year in the outdoor area adjacent to the Convention Center and will be all about hands-on activities. This is one of the many free to the public events SXSW has planned, and will be open on Friday, March 8 from 2:00pm – 6:00pm and again Saturday, March 9 through Monday, March 11 from 11:00am – 6:00pm each day.
  • The SXSW Gaming Expo will also be free and open to the public will be operating once again from the Palmer Events Center and will be open Friday, March 8 from 3:00pm-9:00pm, Saturday, March 9 from noon-8:00pm, and Sunday, March 10 from noon-800pm.
  • SXSW is many things to many people, so go outside your comfort zone and check out some of these events, you may be surprised at what you find or who you meet.
