Reputation, dignity, and memory – A successful SXSW’er needs all of these things

Sunday, February 8th, 2015

Peter Shankman may have written his tips for enjoying SXSW back in 2012, but they remain super-relevant for the event three years later. Rather than focus on the day to day physical survival of Austin’s busiest week, he focuses on how to survive with your reputation intact. It’s mostly aimed at SXSW Interactive and the huge gamut of parties many feel the need to run through, but there are valid points for everyone, such as:

The parties are fun. Just get a glass of club soda with a slice of lime at the beginning of the event, and nurse it. Not only will you be much happier the next morning, but you’ll get to actually remember what you did at the party, who you talked to, and what you said. Perhaps more importantly, you won’t be “that guy.” I’ve been “that guy” once. Three years later, there’s still not water hot enough to wash off the shame.

…and…

Networking starts LONG before you get there. The second you register, use the beauty of social media to let the world know, and find new people who are going as well. Ask them if there’s a hashtag, then use it. You want to have at least ten new people you plan to meet over the course of the conference before you go to the conference. The rest of the people you meet will be nice bonuses. The end game for you is to come out with new contacts.

You can read all of Shankman’s wisdom here.

Why RSVPs at SXSW aren’t worth your Twitter handle

Monday, January 19th, 2015

If you’ve ever wondered why an RSVP at SXSW is never a guarantee of entry, why you still have to queue, meet RSVPster. For forty dollars, you can have the site’s organisers sign up to every event at SXSW Interactive and SXSW Music and send you the details. It doesn’t matter if you only want to go to a few, your name will go down on every list out there.

While it provides great flexibility for you as a punter on the streets of Austin, speaking as a former SXSW Event Organiser it wreaks havoc on any planning. Services like RSVPster (it is not alone in offering this style of service) flood every invite list and tool out there. SXSW Baby! once had 785 people signed up to come to our meet and greet breakfasts in Austin – we got the normal numbers turning up (around thirty to forty, for an 8am event) but our invite list gave us an indication that it would be twenty times that number.

If you’re coming to SXSW and are looking for a list of parties, then there is some value here – just be aware that just because your name is on the list, downs;t mean you’ll get in everywhere.

After all, with services like this, everyone’s name is on everyone’s list.

DJ Jonathan Toubin’s NY Night Train SOUL CLAP at SXSW 2014 Closing Party

Sunday, March 16th, 2014
Jonathan Toubin of New York Night Train

Jonathan Toubin of New York Night Train

Longtime Austinites may recall Jonathan Toubin from his college radio days at 91.7 KVRX or as a member of the band Churchbus, but nowadays Toubin is known best for his New York Night Train’s SOUL CLAP, his popular underground soul dance party across the United States.  He plays all original soul 45s from the 1960s as well as “uncommon upbeat cuts perfect for dancing the night away”, with clubs routinely sold out.

Toubin brings SOUL CLAP to Austin for the official SXSW closing party which is free and open to the public, and takes place Sunday, March 16, 8 pm at the Palm Door on Sixth (508 E. 6th St).

The party begins with four bands including: Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds, led by Kid Congo Powers of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds; Daddy Long Legs, a fast and raw blues trio making their debut in Austin; lo-fi 1960s-inspired garage band Habibi; and Vockah Redu and The Cru, who will bring “one of the most elaborated stage shows in all of the bounce genre.”

The closing party will also feature a thirty minute dance competition with a $100 prize, with Toubin as emcee. Hip-hop legend Boots Riley of The Coup will select the dance songs, and judges include Edwin Neal (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Kid Congo Powers, Austin Brown (of Parquet Courts) and more!

Toubin will close out the night with Soul Clap after the dance-off.

Listen below to a live recording of Jonathan Toubin turning his “flaming o.g. 45rpm soul platters” at the SOUL CLAP and DANCE-OFF at the Brooklyn Bowl.

20×2 asks "What’s the last thing you remember?" for 2014

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014

Another stalwart of the evening entertainment at SXSW Interactive is Saturday night’s 20×2 event. The format is simple – the team ask twenty people the same question, and they are each given two minutes on stage. No restrictions on style, presentation, or methods, are given.

If you’ve not been along before, you’re going to find a wild night of entertainment, inventiveness, excitement, adventure, and a theremin (well there was one last year)…

It all goes down at Elysium (7th and Red River) from 7pm on Saturday March 8th. SXSW badge holders get in for free, for everyone else it’s a $10 cover charge.

The speaker list (but not the runnig order) can be found at 20×2.org.

See you there?
