Julian Assange to speak to SXSW Interactive… live from the Embassy!

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Like many, Julian Assange can’t make it over to Austin for SXSW (although I suspect his reason is slightly more Hollywood than yours), so his conversation with Benjamin Palmer will be conducted by satellite link. It takes place on Saturday March 8th, with a watching venue TBC.

Personally I quite like the Dallas Observer’s cheeky take on the event:

…surely, surely, this is the moment that Assange busts out. Think about it. It’s late at night in the U.K. All the police outside will be watching the interview on their smartphones, just in case he says anything nice about them and how extraordinarily vigilant they are. This is the perfect moment to sneak out the back door.

Just prerecord the whole thing. Do the speech first, then when it’s time for the interview part it can become clear the whole thing is on a prerecorded loop. Chaos reigns as the police realize they’ve been tricked. A cackling Assange speeds off into the distance, to catch a helicopter bound for Ecuador.

Although a 2pm session in Austin is only 8pm in the UK, which as any officer of the Metropolitain Police knows, is about the time London starts to wake up for the weekend…

SXSW V2V Keynote Announced

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

The Tuesday Keynote at the inaugural event will be none other than Steve Case:

Steve Case, one of America’s best-known and most accomplished entrepreneurs and philanthropists, and a pioneer in making the Internet part of everyday life, will deliver the Tuesday, August 13 Keynote for SXSW V2V.

Recently called “one of the nation’s greatest entrepreneurs” by CNBC, Steve Case is Chairman and CEO of Revolution, Co-Founder of America Online and Chairman of The Case Foundation.

Given that he is one of the first interwebz entrepreneurs, he is a very appropriate choice.

Fro more details or to attend, check out SXSW V2V site here.

Okay Dave, where’s the secret QOTSA gig at SXSW?

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Dave Grohl will keynote SXSW Music. Yaay! It’s not the first time Grohl has been at SXSW, in fact 2011 saw the frontman of the Foo Fighters in Austin, and playing at Stubbs. The Foos are on hiatus at the moment, and the rumours are that Grohl is returning to the briefly held drummers stool of Queens of the Stone Age.

If that’s the case… can we get tickets to the secret QOTSA gig on Friday 15th March? Please?

The Boss takes care of the music (and the keynote)

Friday, January 20th, 2012

He’s keynoting SXSW Music, there’s a concert date in Austin during the festival, and now Bruce Springsteen has let the world know that his eleventh album, Wrecking Ball, will be released on Tuesday March 6th.

And the lead track is already out on the internet. It goes a little something like this…

And the keynote? 11am on Thursday March 15… perhaps with another #1 album?

I’m just a man from Brooklyn, with a shovel (and a keynote at SXSW 2012)

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Good friend of SXSW Baby! Baratunde Thurston will be opening keynote at SXSW Interactive 2012.

Baratunde Thurston at Fray

Digital Director at The Onion, popular stand-up, occasional TWiT voice, and the host of “Future Of”, Baratunde Thurston is a busy man with many views on life that could make for a wonderful hour in the Austin Convention Center… but we’ve no idea what the keynote will be on, and from the SXSW description, they’re not sure either:

His keynote address to the SXSW community will occur on Saturday, March 10, at 2pm in the afternoon. He’ll no doubt spark a thought-provoking discussion about the role of technology, comedy and satire in transforming the world around us.

Part of me thinks that Thurston won’t know what he’ll talk about till around 1.45pm on Saturday, March 10th. As to the shovel referene, if you weren’t in the Snowpocalypse (or at Fray Cafe), you’ll never understand…
