It’s the turn of Brooklyn based ‘American Authors’ to answer SXSW Baby’s five questions ahead of their showcase this year!
1. Welcome to SXSW Baby. Tell us a bit about the band.
So the band started playing together at Berklee College of Music in early 2007, through friends of friends we kinda all entered a practice room. Started jamming and bam! There was this chemistry.
We all knew from the get go that we wanted to be in a band with like minded musicians so it was incredible when we found each other. We started making our own D.I.Y tours over the course of the next 3 years Boston was a great place for music but we wanted to start a new it became a little routine. We moved to Brooklyn together shortly after and made the name American Authors, an outlet for us to tell our stories of our lives through music.
After grabbing some run of mill, artist in the making jobs in NYC, we realized we should change the sound and pull deep from our collective inspirations, kept writing and writing, and playing shows in NYC around the time of sandy we say what happened to our city , and other events around the time. We wrote Believer, went to the studio where we tracked it. Best day of my life, the rest of our debut EP came very organically. After XM Radio took to the music, others followed, and we are so blessed and honored to be where we are today.
2. Why have you decided to showcase to SXSW this year?
There a certain energy that happens at SXSW which doesn’t happen anywhere in the world. You never know what surprises are in store, the amount of music going on every year at SXSW is really just mind blowing. It’s one of our favorite festivals to play because people are there for the music the big dogs and the underdogs you can see it all. It’s a truly inspiring place.
Oh yeah and BBQ .
3. Who are your musical influences and heroes?
The Beatles, Sam Cooke, Al Green, Metallica, Green Day, Coldplay, Daft Punk to name a few… the list goes on forever.
4. If our readers could listen to just one of your tracks, which track would it be and why?
Best Day of my Life, it’s really a song you can understand on the surface but can dig as deep as you want to make the best of your life, it’s a universal message. That can guide you thought all the times you may have.
5. Who else do you think we should be listening to at SXSW Music 2014?
Dave grew up with someone in Teengirl Fantasy so they are always a good time. We are stoked on seeing Avi Buffalo and DeLorean as well! Gonna be an exciting Southby and were so excited to be a part of it again!
