Third round of bands added to SXSW Music roster

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

While it’s not the final round of announcements for bands at SXSW Music 2014, the third round just announced by the SXSW team gives us many more names from the March showcases. As usual this is just the names, the timetables come later, but for now head down the list and see if you can spot your favourites.

I’m going to be a little self-promotional and highlight the five Scottish bands in this round (Holy Esque, Honeyblood, Rustie, Withered Hand, and Young Fathers) but there are many more names to look out for in the 741 strong list.

SXSW have announced 1257 bands so far at SXSW. We’re expecting around 2000 bands for the 2014 roster so there’s still time for that ‘Ukrainian Rock Star / Russian Folk Singing Grandmothers’ mash-up to happen!

1300 bands and counting for SXSW Music 2013

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

The Austin team have released the third batch of showcases for SXSW Music this year, taking the total of announced bands up to 1300, from an expected count of around 2100-2200. I expect there are a lot of bands planning travel and accommodation right now (and some frantic calls to US Embassies around the world to sort out a suitable visa).

You can look through the new bands at the SXSW website, or the full list of names is here.

A quick scan through the new names and I can spot some of my personal favourites, including Camera Obscura and Frightened Rabbit from my Scottish stomping grounds. Can you see any of your favourites?

SXSW Music, Year End Wrap Up

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

The backbone of South by Southwest has always been music – and to many SXSW only means music. So what do we know about the 2012 edition so far?

The big news of course is the keynote from Bruce Springsteen, which is more than enough to get Eric excited enough that it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s bagged a seat in the auditorium already. The Boss joins an impressive list of musical alumni who have delivered the keynote, including Bob Geldof (2011), Smokey Robinson (2010), Quincy Jones (2009) and Lou Reed (2008).

Three batches of music acts have been announced, with over 500 showcases confirmed. We’re expecting at least 1700 showcases to make up the final roster, so there are lots of names still to be revealed in the new year.

When the sun is up, the sessions are on, with  lots of knowledge to share around. Just like the showcases, the sessions are not yet scheduled in, we just have a great big list of things that look fun – still, fitting it all together is part of the fun of SXSW

There’s still lots to find out, to discover, and to announce, but already it’s starting to feel like SXSW music 2012 is going to be one of the best weeks yet! Keep checking in with SXSW Baby throughout the months, weeks, and days leading up to your time in Austin, and we’ll help guide you through the fun.

Finally, how could we not mention the return of Kevin’s mammoth ‘Operation Every Band‘, listening and reviewing every band set to play SXSW 2012!
