One of the really great things about SXSW is the chance encounters one has while attending. One of those happened for me yesterday when I sat next to Luciana Faulhaber at a screening of “Awful Nice”.

Faulhaber introduced herself as an actress, but mentioned she is producing a horror Film titled “Don’t Look” and is running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding. After reading the campaign page (which has 11 days left) we interviewed her via email.

1. What inspired the basic plot?
The plot was inspired by my own experience as an immigrant living in NYC and going to friend’s houses for “friendsgiving”, an old Dutch family tale and a true murder that was on the news a few years ago. The story was tailored for our amazing location Plow Farms in Morgantown, PA. The Eshelman family has been amazingly kind to us and made our trailer shoot such a blast we cannot wait to come back and shoot our feature with them.

2. Interesting to use crowdsourcing for the film, what drove that decision?
The decision came from wanting to just make a movie. We are lucky enough to have location and some materials donated to us and we continue to look for sponsors. Kickstarter is the way we found to raise the minimum we need to pay our cast and crew minimum fees and have ownership over our creative process. This was we share not only the experience of watching a movie with our audience but we also share the experience of making it. We have honestly been surprised over the reaction of the people in our lives. Some have been kind and supportive above our imagination and their means and others made us question the reason we even keep them in our lives. Regardless, this has been a humbling experience for all of us and made us realize we wouldn’t wanna make a film with anybody else. Javier E. Gomez, Adam Lim, Lindsay DiFulvio and I feel reassured of this everyday. Like Jodi Foster said: “There is nothing more intimate than making movies together.”
3. How far along are you with the project?
We have been working on script development, legal papers and kickstarter campaign since November. Our screenwriter Jessica Boucher has been not only dedicated to making the story as accurate as possible we also want it to keep as real as possible. The fear is on what you don’t see, on the expectation of what’s coming and the possibility that this story could happen. Jess has been a true asset to the team. We are looking at a summer of pre production and shooting early fall.

4. We’d love to see it at SXSW 2014, will it be done in time for submission?
We would love that to happen too! We are planning to make sure we at least get a rough cut in. This is my first SXSW festival experience and I certainly want to come back with this film. Not only SXSW is fun and more eclectic than other festivals, but it also has an educated and enthusiastic audience and a filmmaker cannot wish for anything better.

5. What challenges have you faced as Producer?
Producing is so hard! I keep telling people that I am learning and as such I maintain my title as actress and raise it to producing students. I have friends who are producers and while I watch them talk about it while working on their movies I see how much I have to learn. Not only did I respect them before but now I have a newfound admiration. I can say though that the biggest challenge has been being a woman producer in a man dominated world. You would think that it would allow me to get away with some things but its quite the opposite. I have learn awful things I haven’t heard from men since the time I worked as a bartender in NYC. But that is the great thing about collaborating with people you trust. You stick together and raise above it. Love does and we are doing it together with the support of our friends, family and believers. That kind of positive energy is priceless.

Their Kickerstarter can be found at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/928998307/dont-look-a-new-horror-feature-film

This movie really could have gone down the toilet (oh come on! These jokes line themselves up!) but Milo managed to be one of the best horror comedies I have ever seen. Ken Marino is fantastic as the main character, and as the director/writer team pointed out in the Q&A who hasn’t had something come out of their a**?

For those of you worried about the gore factor, let me tell you that while this movie does have its gore laden moments it is one that doesn’t go over the top on the flying guts. In fact you might find yourself laughing more often than covering your eyes and cheering for the er? underdog? so to speak.

If you missed it tonight, Milo has additional screenings Monday March 11 at Alamo Slaughter, Thursday March 14 at Paramount, Friday March 15 at Topher.

“Sake-Bomb” is a cocktail created by dropping a shot of sake into a pint of beer. It’s also a comedic road movie about a sarcastic Asian American and his Japanese cousin. Sebastian is a bitter, self-deprecating wannabe Internet star from Los Angeles. He is recently dumped by his girlfriend and on the look out for someone new. When his cousin Naoto, a naive sake maker from Japan, shows up to find his own ex-girlfriend, Sebastian takes him to northern California to find her. They are a clash of cultures waiting to happen. Someone has to break first. Together they meet a colorful group of characters as they come to grips with who they are and the true nature of the girlfriends they’re pursuing.

We had the opportunity to reach out to Carter, the director of the SXSW Visions feature “Maladies“, and interview him regarding his work and the film:

1. Where did the idea for the voice over (voice in James’ head) come from?

It came from my head. I’m very interested in performance. Early on in my career I made a series of videos over a number of years that utilized a dummy. A life-size figure that I would use as an ‘actor’ in small videos and super8 films. I used various types of dialogue and recordings to illustrate the speaking or thoughts of the dummy in the films. The multiple voice overs – and use of the ear-piece with James and I in the film came from that work I did years ago with the dummy as opposed to real people.

2. The piece is obviously set in the winter of 1978, any particular reason, other than the ubiquity of pay phones for James to use for comfort?

It’s actually set in 1963 or somewhere thereabouts. However there are references to other time-frames in the film, for instance; when Catherine and Patricia are watching the coverage of the Jim Jones / People’s Temple massacre unfold on television, that occurred in 1978. I enjoyed having the film have these ‘time shifts’ and not be committed to a certain decade, even though the ‘look’ of the film is the early 60′s. Catherine’s life as a closeted cross-dresser needed to be set in that time frame as well for it to work. The homosexual closet in the 50′s, 60′s, 70′s is of interest to me as illustrated via Catherine, and in particular – her encounter with Alan Cumming in the diner scene. David Strathairn’s character as well faces some of the same struggles as Catherine.

3. What, if any, unique challenges did you face during filming?

We had a very tight schedule in which to shoot a lot of scenes. We also had a blizzard with a few days left of shooting.

4. Did you produce any of the art seen in the film?

I produced most of it, paintings and sculptures. I also hired two other artists, Nancy Ford and Dan Spencer, who’s work I like – to create pieces for the sets. It was important for me to have actual art in the sets with the actual performers.

5. What message do you want people to take away from the film?

There’s no message. However the film illustrates the lives of a few forward thinking characters in a less open time.

In “Maladies”, an idiosyncratic drama from the internationally acclaimed painter, sculptor and filmmaker, Carter, Academy Award®-nominee James Franco stars as James, a former actor who along with his sister Patricia (Fallon Goodson) retreats to the home of his best friend, the artist Catherine (Catherine Keener). Here, James’s grasp on reality remains tenuous at best as he attempts to redefine himself creatively through his new passion, writing. Through Catherine’s care, kindred eccentricities and friendship – along with the creative sanctuary her seaside home provides – we chart the fragments of James’s struggle with reality and the everyday conflicts with those who matter to him most.

TINY: A Story About Living Small was already on our “must see” list of films at SXSW this year, but having seen the screener, we have to say that you too, must see this film.

With beautiful cinematography, stunning landscapes shown through all the seasons, and personal stories about life, it’s meaning, and how one lives it, this film is a touching portrayal of one man’s desire to define his home.

And as it has an environmental aspect, we’d love to see it screen at SXSW Eco this fall as well.

What is home? And how do we find it? TINY follows one couple’s attempt to build a Tiny House from scratch with no building experience, and profiles other families who have downsized their lives into houses smaller than the average parking space. Through homes stripped down to their essentials, the film raises questions about sustainability, good design, and the changing American Dream.
