Community Support for Red River Tragedy

As a result of the tragic event which occurred early on March 13 that resulted in numerous injuries and two fatalities, resources have been made available by South by Southwest, the City of Austin, and the American Red Cross of Central Texas to assist residents and visitors.

An Emotional Support Center was opened to the public Friday, March 13, and continues today, Saturday, March 15, from 10 am to 8 pm in Room 5C at the Austin Convention Center (500 E Cesar Chavez Street). From SXSW:

This jointly-operated center will focus on providing counseling and emotional support to SXSW staff and volunteers, as well as residents or visitors who were impacted by the incident in which a car ran through barricades and killed two people and injured 23 others.

The Red Cross is also operating information assistance phone lines to help impacted individuals connect with loved ones or to talk with a counselor by phone. Call the Red Cross at 1-800-928-4271.

Other resources and ways to give:

  • The Blood Center of Central Texas (Type O & Type O Negative): 512-206-1266
  • APD Victim Services can be reached at 512-974-5037
  • Witnesses should call APD at 512-974-5186 or email police3@austintexas.gov

Monetary donations to support relief services can be made to the SXSW Cares Fund. The SXSW Cares Fund will help people affected by the events of March 13. The funds will be disbursed to those most affected through a community-based process.

Also note that the SXSW Safe Harbor Room is located in Room 5AB. The Safe Harbor Room is a place for people in recovery to meet during SXSW. The sessions are informal and supportive. Conferences and large gatherings can be a challenging atmosphere for those who choose sobriety. All are welcome to come to the Safe Harbor Room to meet with like-minded attendees.

Updated: A ghost bike installation by local non-profitĀ Please Be Kind to Cyclists is also planned for tonight at 7 pm Sunday, March 16 at 4:30 pm at 9th and Red River as a memorial to those killed and injured.

Additional counseling may become available post-SXSW through the Austin/Travis County Integral Care crisis intervention program, which also manages a 24 Hour Crisis Hotline.

Editor’s Note: Due to concern from the City of Austin, along with an event at the Mohawk that is expected to draw a big crowd Saturday, the vigil has been moved to Sunday.
