Five questions for Mikaela Davis
Rochester based Mikaela Davis is heading to SXSW Music this year, and we caught up with her to ask the singer-songwriter our five questions…
1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I started studying harp when I was 8 years old, and started writing songs when I was 11. My songs were first written on piano, but I switched to writing for harp in high school after hearing Joanna Newsom on NPR and some encouragement from my good friend Alex Coté. Alex and I were music buddies and he introduced me to a wide variety of artists. He soon after started playing drums and percussion with me, and before I knew it, I had a band! Cian McCarthy joined the band on guitar, sitar, and keys a few years ago. We all mesh together really well and our training ranges from classical to jazz.
2. Why have you decided to showcase to SXSW this year?
I have always dreamed of playing at a big festival like SXSW. After playing in Austin last summer, I fell in love with the city and I can’t wait to be back!
3. Who are your musical influences and heroes?
My biggest influences are Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens, but my heroes are The Beatles!
4. If our readers could listen to just one of your tracks, which track would it be and why?
“When the White Horse Takes Me Away” – I would choose this track because it’s off my new EP Fortune Teller and I believe it best displays the new direction and sound the band has.
5. Who else do you think we should be listening to at SXSW Music 2014?
