SXSW Film Has a New Screening Category
SXSW Film is growing!
This year they introduce a new screening category: “Episodic”. It’s not a complete surprise given SXSW Film’s screenings of HBO’s Girls and A&E’s Bates Motel last year. Given the rise in popularity of “episodic television” in cable and the web, along with the confluence of stars appearing in both film and television (Julia Louis Dreyfuss was nominated for Golden Globes for both categories) it seems a natural that SXSW Film would grow in this direction.
The announcement and further details can be found here.
There was some online commentary about the naming of the category. The Austin American-Statesmen tech culture writer, Omar L. Gallaga, put it best:
“#SXSW would rather call something “SXSW Episodic”
than what it really is, “SXSW TV?”Is the word “TV” over?”
Is “TV” a bygone term? With people watching “shows” on televisions, the web, cable, on mobile devices, etc (are Pebble shows far behind?) what should the these 30-60 minute bits of entertainment be called?
Perhaps “Episodic” is the right term. I’m sure it’ll grow on me.
