Neil Young set to debut his music player at SXSW 2014

Singer-songwriter turned audio hardware developer Neil Young will take to the stage at SXSW this year to launch the Pono music player, reports SXSW this afternoon:

Neil Young has long been an advocate for studio-quality music in the digital age, and laments the relatively inferior sound quality offered by the current services. Pono, built from the ground-up, is his attempt to remedy this problem, and deliver to the listener the exact, full sounds the artist intends. Young – a Grammy-Award Winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee – will certainly go into more detail on Pono and deliver choice lessons from his legendary and storied career at SXSW.

The Pono features a brand new file format which Young says will address the issues around the compression and lossy MP3 format. The major labels have signed up to provide content for the store that is associated with the Pono music player, so there is content ready for launch, and I’ll be listening carefully to Young’s speech to see if he con convince us all to buy ‘Ziigy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars’ once more in another format.

The Baby! team would also hazard a guess he might do a showcase in the Texan state capital… assuming he paid his fee and sent a request in through SonicBids last year.
